Newborn sessions are intended to capture the sweet, new life that you have brought home and create timeless heirlooms for your family to treasure for generations.
Booking your newborn session differs from other portrait sessions as the timing of baby’s arrival is often a surprise. Your due date, session fee, and contract lock in a slot on the schedule regardless of when your little one arrives. Please remember, I prefer to photograph your baby in the first 10 days following birth. These early days are best as baby is sleepy and we will be able to capture some lovely poses. Plan for your session lasting up to 3 hours, which allows plenty of time for feedings, changes, and a variety of poses. I will bring a few props, but if there is a special item or heirloom you would like included, please have it on hand for your session. I have seen guitars, jewelry, favorite team gear (helmet, jersey), baseball mitts and balls, wedding rings, and more.
For your session:
Sessions typically take place in your home, and if you'd like I can make a visit before baby's arrival to determine the best location in your home for lighting and space considerations. If you prefer, you may come to my in-home studio and take advantage of our gorgeous outdoor locations should the weather allow. It's best for baby to be sleepy and mellow so plan to feed baby just before your session. I also bring a portable heater to keep baby nice and cozy, especially if you desire photographs of baby with his or her clothes removed. I usually request that mommy and daddy not be in the room while I'm shooting as your voices and smells can keep the baby awake. If baby is awake I won't be able to capture those wonderful sleeping images. Please use that time to relax, have a cup of coffee, or shower. You'll be close enough to call in if I need your help. If you plan to include mom, dad, and/or siblings in your session I will usually do those last or if the baby fully wakes.
